1-2″ fully healed frag. Chalice corals, also known as Echinophyllia or Oxypora, are beautiful and popular coral species in the aquarium hobby. They have large, fleshy polyps with vibrant colors and unique patterns. Proper care is essential to ensure their health and growth in a home aquarium. Here are some guidelines for chalice coral care:
  1. Aquarium Parameters:
    • Water temperature: Chalice corals prefer a temperature range of 75-80°F (24-27°C).
    • Water flow: Moderate water flow is suitable, as strong currents may damage the delicate tissue of chalice corals.
    • Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended. Provide a mix of blue and white spectrum light to enhance coloration and growth.
    • Water quality: Maintain stable water parameters. Regularly test and maintain appropriate levels of salinity (specific gravity of 1.024-1.026), pH (7.8-8.4), alkalinity (8-12 dKH), calcium (380-450 ppm), and magnesium (1200-1350 ppm).
  2. Placement:
    • Chalice corals should be placed in a stable location, preferably on the bottom of the aquarium or securely attached to a rock or frag plug.
    • Give them sufficient space to grow, as they can expand their fleshy tissue significantly over time.
  3. Feeding:
    • Chalice corals are primarily photosynthetic and derive much of their nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissue. Ensure adequate lighting for photosynthesis.
    • They are also opportunistic feeders and benefit from supplemental feedings. Target feed small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or chopped seafood once or twice a week.
  4. Water Changes and Filtration:
    • Regular water changes are important to maintain water quality and replenish trace elements.
    • Use a protein skimmer and high-quality mechanical and chemical filtration to maintain water clarity and remove excess nutrients.
  5. Coral Handling:
    • Avoid direct contact with the chalice coral’s tissue as it is delicate and can be easily damaged.
    • If fragging or moving the coral is necessary, use coral-safe tools and handle them gently.
  6. Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
    • Regularly monitor your aquarium’s water parameters using appropriate test kits.
    • Watch for signs of distress such as tissue recession, discoloration, or unusual growth patterns.
    • If any issues arise, investigate and address them promptly. Consult with experienced hobbyists or reef-keeping forums for assistance if needed.

Remember, chalice corals are sensitive to rapid changes in water parameters. Maintaining stability and providing proper lighting and nutrition will help ensure the well-being of these corals in your aquarium.
